Stories, Ideas and Articles about the Forest of Manchester Township

I want to thank the residents of Manchester Township for making such a great effort to limit outdoor burning during this extremely dangerous fire season. You continue to show your pride by protecting  Manchester 's 16000+ acres of beautiful forest, which is our home and home to our great wildlife. The DNR normally positions a "heavy" unit (DNR Fire Truck and bulldozer) in the Shamrock area daily so they can respond within minutes to most areas of the township. The units are staffed with some of the best firefighters you'll find around here.

Our Fire warden is Virginia O'NeillN3493 E. Pine Hill Rd 715-284-4274

Here's a picture from the tower of the recent Sparta fire. Help prevent that from happening here.

Point of interest/information By LeRoy Latham Operations Manager WCYC Fallhall Glen 3/22/09

The Wisconsin Christian Youth Camp (WCYC) has dedicated 160 of its 450 acres to the state's Managed Forest Lands STEWARDSHIP FORESTRY PLAN. We have studied and kept up on the plans available and with changes that have been made in the last few years decided it was time for us to enroll in the DNR program.  In addition to the tax savings we have received a comprehensive 25 yr. harvest and management plan that includes maps and schedule by area that meets our organizations objectives for environmental education and recreation within timber management. Our taxes are paid on 410 acres and tax-exempt on the 40 where our buildings are located.  We have hired and recommend Mr. Ed Vlach as an independent certified plan writer.  Mr. Dave Halverson in the local DNR office can be an additional source of answers to questions.  Also you may preview the application form at Wisconsin.gov, DNR, and then, section 77.82(3) Wis. Stats., Form 2450-132

"The Big Timber"by Tim Barnum 3/15/09

Have you ever wondered what the area looked like back in the logging days of the 1800s? How big were the white pine trees, really?
Well the other day while on a family driving to Tomah we rounded the turn on county O just outside of Shamrock near Clear Creek. There we noticed some large white pines, do you suppose that’s what the forest looked like back in the day. When we got on the interstate at Milston I noticed A stand of white pine to the northeast that seemed larger yet. The next day we decided to take another drive so off to the beautiful Castle Mound state park we headed. After a brief and beautiful drive we were astounded by the size of the large Norway pine White pine & the other timber within the park. This is such a great time of the year to be in the woods, looking for sheds from that big buck that we all saw but nobody shot or looking at the new growth which is coming up. So get out & enjoy this new season while it is still young and you are too!

HAPPY SPRING!
